In
the late 1800's Boston philanthropist James W. Tufts
had a dream of finding a warm, centrally located area
where one could maintain a relaxed and leisurely
lifestyle. After purchasing a large tract of
land he teamed with renowned golf course architect,
Donald Ross, and together they built what is today
rightfully named "The Home of American
Golf." Boasting over 40 world-class golf
courses, the Sandhills region has become host to some
of the most prestigious events in golf history,
including the most recent 1999 U.S. Open.
Although the rolling terrain, mild climate and
longleaf pine forests make this beautiful land ideal
for "the game", the Sandhills has transpired
into much more. It is tennis, riding, quaint shops,
varied restaurants, and an array of fairs and
festivals. The Sandhills of today represents the
fulfillment of much that James Tufts envisioned when
he set foot here over a century ago. Rich in
history, tradition and natural beauty, this most
unique community offers an approach to living that is
unparalleled.

| Climate |
| The
Sandhills has a year round climate that is "not
too hot and not too cold!" Our moderate
temperatures and dry conditions are largely due to the
protection we receive from The Appalachian Mountains,
keeping most cold and rain-filled fronts just to our
west. With a combination of mild temperatures,
sandy soil and a hilly terrain our conditions are
almost perfect the whole year for either morning or
afternoon tee times. For today's forecast or an
extended area outlook visit the weather center in the
box at right. |
